One of our favorite types of commercially available organic foods are those which travel well and for the most part this means it does not require refrigeration. So we purchased some Corn Thins from the Real Foods Company (like that name).. Checking out the bag we see that they are certified organic by Australian Certified Organic. They also display the USDA Organic Label and the GMO Free Lable (indicating the product is free of genetically modified ingredients). Nice. They are described as popped corn cakes and here’s their pitch..”The great taste of golden sun-ripened corn with sesame.” OK.. And [...click to contimue reading...]
As you may have noticed we’ve moved…So we’re rebuilding what we had and trying to make a few improvements along the way. For one thing the recipe page is going to be easier to access (just click on the link under “Pages” at the top of the sidebar) and printer friendly PDF’s will be available within the blog post itself by clicking a link. Soooo..sorry for the inconvenience and everything should be back to normal sometime in November and onward and upward from there. Just wanted to post a note so you don’t think we’re [...click to contimue reading...]
A classic New York Times Article delved into the subject of whether Organically Produced Food is actually better Food. Here’s what they summarized from several studies…Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry study found that 52% more Vitamin C in Organic vs. Conventionally Produced Corn…Polyphenols were present in significantly higher levels in organic vs conventional marionberries, peaches and pears..European Journal of Nutrition verified that organic vs conventional soup has higher levels of Salicylic Acid.. As for rebuttal, the conventional food crowd states that the differences are not great enough to translate into any meaningful health benefits…OK.. I guess [...click to contimue reading...]
I’m a bit of an Ice Cream Addict. I love the taste, the coolness, the sweetness and creaminess. Absolutely love it. But I’m not too crazy about the cholesterol it dumps into my system and ultimately on the inside of my veins. They weren’t kidding when they said death by chocolate. So in a search for a healthier alternative we bought some So Delicious Organic Chocolate Velvet “Ice Cream”. This stuff has 130 calories vs the 300 for Ben and Jerry’s (B&J’s) New York Super Chunk, it has 0 mgs cholesterol vs. 35 for B&J’s [...click to contimue reading...]
One of the easiest ways to prepare Bouillon is to use a Coffee Maker (stay with me on this one).. First rinse out the Filter Basket and Carafe. Then add the amount of water called for in the Bouillon Instructions on the Package. Finally, add the Bouillon Cubes to the Carafe and turn the Coffee Maker on. From this point the Bouillon makes itself and keeps warm until you need it. When you’re done cooking just wash out the Carafe as it was the only part of the Coffee Maker in contact with the Bouillon Flavor. Since [...click to contimue reading...]
Risotto is one of those Classic Italian Side Dishes that we all love but many are intimidated to prepare. Sure you can use a box of “Premix” old ingredients that are most likely contaminated by “flavorings” and “preservatives”..ugh… And you know making your own is really a piece of cake, especially after you’ve done it a few times. That being said we give you an Organic Risotto Recipe. You can access this from our recipe page. Hope you enjoy the Risotto and your time cooking. Until next time have fun and live naturally.
One of the allures of the organic lifestyle is that we can be lulled into the false belief that you can just eat naturally and clean, eliminate all the pesticides and chemical additives etc. and you’ll be remarkably healthy. Well..not really. The simple fact is that you have to exercise, stretch, manage stress and get your proper rest. Sorry folks, but the allure of the magic bullet that something consumed will make everything alright… is not right. Let’s talk exercise. Our body needs it to be at it’s best. It seems that we physically (and you can argue [...click to contimue reading...]
Organic Buttermilk Pancakes. Warm & comforting. Just right for this time of year. We’ve put together a recipe that’s easy and quick to bring together. This beats the premix “quick pancakes”…. which, lets say taste “not good”. So you get a better pancake and the cost is about the same…what about the time and effort required? Well, like a lot of products in the “conventional” food world the Quick Mix is really in my opinion just a bunch of smoke and mirrors. Basically, such products simply pre-measure the dry ingredients. So the work you save [...click to contimue reading...]
I’m a fan of scratch cooking for two reasons, the main one being that I love good food and homemade scratch dishes are simply the best (so long as you know what you’re doing). And the second reason of course is that I simply love to cook. However….some days you just get slammed with things to do. Or sometimes you just get in the mood for something all of a sudden and you don’t have all the ingredients you need right on hand. For these real world scenarios (and for those who can’t or aren’t interested [...click to contimue reading...]
