The Milwaukee Sentinel published an article that said among other things that choosing to eat organic food and then loading up these groceries into a gas guzzling SUV is nothing less than hypocrisy. Does the author Alysha Witwicki have a point? Well yes she does, but it is a point that has gone astray..

Now, she’s correct in that one aspect of eating organic is about protecting our environment..we don’t support the use of chemicals on our farms and subsequently on our foods & in our water. We don’t like exposing Barley Field. Photo by Victor Szalvayourselves, the earth and the plants & animals to it.. We feel that there’s a better way. Just as how I will not support a country that does not act ethically towards it’s citizens or the world I similarly won’t patronize industrial segments such as conventional farms which operate in ways I don’t necessarily agree with.

That said, am I a hypocrite if I buy organic groceries and then drive them home in an SUV? Well, maybe yes and maybe no (however, for the record I drive a 4-Cylinder Mini Truck).  What I mean by this is that if I preach that I’m a man who’s perfect in supporting the environment but drive an SUV then that’s hypocrisy. But if, as is the case, I say that I’m just a human being who’s trying to act responsibly for the health of my person, society and the environment but who falls far short of perfection. Someone who’s not prefect but is aware. Someone who’s working on learning more and doing more (like publishing this blog) then that’s not hypocrisy.

The author also provides us insight as to her vision of what being green is really all about..

”Actress Jennifer Aniston was quoted as saying she takes three-minute showers and brushes her teeth in the shower to be less wasteful. That’s what going green should be about… ”

Well, hate to disagree, and I’m sure that Jen even with her new economical Prius has her moments of being less than perfectly green. Which is fine because the point with being Organic or Green or Religious/whatever is to do your best and constantly try to contribute more. We’ll change the way things are through education and example. If someone starts by eating Organic, well good for them. Hopefully as they get more and more into it and eventually chuck that SUV (and, when unnecessary, the polystyrene and plastic as well). The fact that the Organic movement is cutting into mainstream groceries is testament of the power of many people making many small but superior choices. Let’s keep getting greener every day & live as naturally as we can.
