The New Year season is upon us and traditionally this is a time when we reflect on the past year and look forward as to how we can improve the upcoming one. Although these are personal choices there are ten easy things we can resolve to do to make our lifestyles more organic and environmentally friendly.
Many people are leery of Teflon Non-Stick Cookware. Now it’s not absolutely certain that it has negative effects but why mess with it at all when there’s Cast Iron…An all natural non-stick cookware. And not only is it non-stick but unlike Teflon cookware it can last a lifetime. It even adds iron to your foods….But first you must make the cast iron cookware you purchase non-stick. This process is known as “seasoning”.
The environmental costs of mining gold are tremendous. From a 2005 New York Times Article miners must dig up over 30 tons of raw ore to obtain a single ounce of pure gold. Then, after excavation they typically use cyanide based compounds to extract the elemental gold. Needless to say the environmental impact and energy costs are tremendous.
Went to shopping today during lunch and saw a lot of great kitchen deals…today at Macy’s in New Hampshire I bought a 16 Quart Enamel Stock Pot for $19 (Regular Price is $60) and a Cast Iron Casserole Dutch Oven for $7 (Regular Price is $20)…. Also in tonight’s paper.. Kohl’s is selling a KitchenAid Heavy Duty Stand Mixer for $229.99 (Regular Price $369.99). This is just to give the OTK Readers a heads up. I was just doing the dishes and noticed that I was washing some old yogurt containers and an empty jar that once contained salsa..Looking over to the stove is a small bottle of extra virgin olive oil….I think I bought that bottle last year and have been refilling it from large bulk jugs of the stuff.. keeps the oil handy and in an easy to pour container.
