Every kitchen needs a mixer with some serious power behind it. Back in the day it use to be the Sunbeam Mixer (and my Dad still uses his from the 1950′s). But if you’re thinking of one today I can 
say that the KitchenAid Mixer has been very good for me. The thing is heavy enough to want to stay put and has a powerful enough motor to do the initial mixing of the dough when I make bread (theoretically it can do all the kneading but in my opinion if you want it done right you have to work those last cups of flour in with your hands..).
There’s also a ton of gadgets you can attach such as a pasta maker. The bottom line is that if you can afford the right tools you should get them. Cooking is your hobby and things like this make it much more enjoyable. Be good to yourself.
