Review: So Delicious Organic Dairy-Free Chocolate Peanut Butter Frozen Dessert

What a week it’s been ….. Yahoo who handles the web hosting for my business has gone from bad to really..really bad. So I’ve been scrambling trying to learn web design in CSS and rebuilding the site for a new hosting service. Di even had this party-ish thing that I had to bag out of…sheesh..  Anyway, whining really didn’t make me feel better before, so I got some So Delicious Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert (aka Soy Ice Cream). And here’s the deal..  It cost me $4.69 for a quart (four cups). However, when I opened it up [...click to contimue reading...]

We’ve added another category which should be fun. It’s called “Try Something New”. Now this is basically to highlight some food item or cooking technique that you can add to broaden your culinary existence.  Well the first item isn’t something that most of you would consider as “something new”. It just the plain old red pepper, not the hot variety but just the red cousin of the green pepper.. sold in just about every supermarket in the civilized world. But, let me ask you this, when’s the last time you’ve incorporated this food ingredient into your [...click to contimue reading...]

Taste Test: Revision..Conventional Extra Virgin Olive Oil vs. BJ's Earth's Pride Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil

We’re adding a new category to the Organic Test Kitchen and that’s Taste Tests. This should be a fun one where we compare our impression of two different food items. and we’ll be objective with no agenda to push. If the conventional item for instance tastes better it tastes better..we can’t do anything about it. It is what it is as they say. The conventional stuff might have hidden residual pesticides but again it is what it is… Now this is a revised post. When we first taste tested just the oils we found the [...click to contimue reading...]

I saw my brother cooking a lamb over Easter .. Oven gets opened..peeks in. Pokes the carcass.. Shuts oven.. .. 15 minutes go by.. Opens oven door..peeks in. Takes a knife to the carcass.. inspects for redness.. Shuts oven door.. Repeats until he gets sick of it and says some cuss word and if anybody doesn’t like it tough (second cuss-word).  .. Nothing catches the Easter Holiday Spirit like underdone lamb and cussing. .. But it doesn’t have to be this way…  Most people think of recipes mostly with regards to complicated dishes, especially baking. I [...click to contimue reading...]

Like most dishes you can customize mayonnaise to your own individual style. One such mayonnaise version is known as Green Mayonnaise. Green Mayonnaise is mayo on veggies. So you get the great taste of mayo with a veggie kick.  Although it doesn’t work everywhere it is a really nice flavor addition when using mayo in salads, with fish etc.  Here’s how: Put a saucepan with water on the heat and bring to a boil We’re going to need about one densely packed cup of uncooked green veggies. So get your favorites. Some suggestions are Fresh Organic Spinach, Scallions, [...click to contimue reading...]

Review of Horizon Organic Fat-Free Plain Organic Yogurt

I’ve been missing in action for about a week due to tax time (and last weekend Diane collared me to have one day of fun .. she’s taking her 5th grade class camping this week so she needed time to hang out. .. so we hung out). Apr 092008

It was my birthday last Sunday which also happens to be my excuse de jour for not posting. But in addition to being an excuse for goofing off, I got some cool new gifts as well. One was this laser paperweight from a dear friend, a super sharp high carbon steel paring knife from another (who felt my pain over not finding one at the Thrift Store) and another was also got Ralph the Fish. I was told I needed a live-in companion and so was given Ralph. And you know what? .. I really love [...click to contimue reading...]

The trouble with a the premixed special seasonings out there are three: They’re generally non-organic (ie Chemicalized). By the time the spices are prepped, packaged in bulk for the specialty seasoning manufacturer, transported and waiting to be purchased they’ve reached legal drinking age.  And spices flatten out as time goes by. You have to accept what they give you. I probably like more heat than you do. You may really like the garlic notes. In other words no matter who you are the store bought spice isn’t “just right”.  So here’s the solution. Buy basic organic [...click to contimue reading...]

Sweet Deal for a J.A. Henckels Professional Meat Cleaver at the Salvation Army

So a few weekends ago Di was over and while we were chatting I was peeling some vegis with my paring knife. Was distracted and broke off the blade (was diving into a whole turnip). Should have known since it was chatting with her that caused the distraction leading to the thumb slicing when sharpening my chef’s knife. As a result there is a no sharpening policy if Di is in the kitchen at the time.  Anyway went down to the Salvation Army to see if they had a decent paring knife for sale. The [...click to contimue reading...]
