As the demand for organic food broadens we are seeing more and more folks entering the business. And that means greater competition and therefore (thankfully!) lower prices. So we took a saunter down to the local Costco Store and picked up some of their Kirkland Organic Salsa.
First, the price for a 65 oz. jar was $5.66. Nice. .. Especially when you look at how much those small jars of the non-organic salsas cost.
Next, ingredients. This stuff contains (all these are organic) .. tomatoes, jalapenos, onions, tomato paste, cilantro, sugar, vinegar, cumin, garlic and cayenne. It also contains water and citric acid. By the way, the organic ingredients just listed were by order of amount contained in the Organic Salsa. Water was in a lesser amount than the tomatoes, jalapenos & onions. That’s Nice. .. Should be a good thick salsa.
Opened it up and you’ll find that it really is a nice thick and chunky salsa and not some watered down soupy thing. .. Taste… kicks butt. A really nice and full flavored salsa. And the type we reviewed was the medium and it was in no way over the top in terms of heat. And if you want to spice it up with seasoning and fresh peppers you can easily knock yourself out by using this as a base to make your own signature organic salsa (… a good idea for a future post).
This stuff also is impressive nutritionally. For a full two tablespoons it has only 10 calories (however, beware, it does have 220 mg of sodium if you are watching this). Why does this impress me? Because you are getting a great bang for the calorie in terms of taste enhancement of your dishes.
Now I use this on everything. Nothing against ketchup but for my taste it’s totally lame in comparison. Soupy, nothing going on. Now with the Costco Organic Salsa, I put it on my egg white omelettes and many other dishes. It not only tastes great, but I’m eating a nice variety of things and that my friends is definitely a good thing. I’m thinking that this is a product you want to have on hand as BBQ Season starts.
So, in summary, thumbs up for this Salsa with low cost, organic ingredients and great taste.
It is everything Theo says it is but I am by myself in eating this in my house and it’s a very large container. This morning I was surprised when I opened the lid and there was a large piece of moldy stuff stuck to the side and on the lid. I know what the problem is: No preservatives.. So now I have to throw out more than a half a bottle. I wish Costco would put a use by after opening date on the container so dummies like me won’t just assume it will last for months like Chi Chi’s and Pace etc.
I love this salsa!
I had just thrown out a large jar of Pace that had molded so don’t blame the lack of preservatives on the mold. I think I’ll put some in a smaller jar to see what happens.
From Theo at OrganicTestKitchen: It really is a great product. Let us know if you find some great uses for it. Cheers!
I second this. This salsa rocks. I eat it so fast there’s not a chance for mold.
Hi Grok, It really does rock and agree the mold doesn’t stand a chance. Keep in touch with any info on future finds. Best, Theo
Unfortunately, no longer on the shelf, or in the computer at our Costco in Arizona!!!!
First off, this is one of the best tasting non-specialty salsas I’ve tasted.
Lori, that’s a shame. Don’t lose hope though, I’ve found that a lot of Costco’s items are seasonal. It just might show up again in the near future…
Costco now sells it in two 38 oz. Jars but prices up to $7.59! Still worth the price. Other brand salsas don’t compare to Kirkland’s.
Correction price is up
In Albuquerque, New Mexico, Costco sold this GREAT salsa for about 6 months (2009?), then it disappeared from their shelves. No amount of requests brought it back. Too bad, since all they have now is Pace, or another brand that tastes like battery acid. Was there really not enough demand here? Very strange marketing.
I sampled this at costco over w/end and now Im HOOKED on it. The best I have ever tasted. I bought them and couldnt wait to get home and have some with a spoon none the less. I have put it over PHIlly cream cheese and crackers and also mixed an Avocado with it and OMG. SOOOOOOOOOO GOODDDDDDDDD . How does toasted cocktail rye w/cheddar sound????and add the SALSA on top for finger food or on tacos, enchiladas, pulled pork. Its endless R U HUNGRY NOW? SO GO GET SOME B4 THEY RUN OUT.
Been in Australia since 1993 from Colorado, I buy Kikland salsa at Costco here and almost cried the first time i had it. it tasted like home! had kinda gotten used to what passes as salsa here.
I cook with it. Black Beans & Greens & Salsa, add any other heat to taste. The salsa blends well with the black beans available at costco.
Recipe: 4 cans of black beans, 1 jar of Kirkland Org Salsa, 1or 2 bunchs of kale/collard. Chop the greens reasonably small, put in large put, add beans with liquid, add salsa, add any other hot spice you like (for me cayenne & jalapenos).
Bring to a gentle boil, and then simmer……a long time! Let the flavors all meld together for an hour or more, stirring occasionally on low.
Serve it as you would a savory bowl of chili, or black bean soup.
Enjoy!
OH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why is this SO GOOD? Make my own salsa but cannot replicate this stuff. It is a party-food must. There is little is does not go with. Keep it coming Costco!
Marie (and anyone else interested) – you can take the large jar and split it into smaller jars. Then put one in the fridge and others in the freezer. When you’re ready to thaw one out, thaw in fridge for about 24-30 hrs. That way you can “have your cake and eat it ALL too”.
I was born and raised in Mexico and LOVE this salsa. It’s the best store-bought I’ve ever found. I get cranky if we run out or my hubby buys ….. Pace! UGH!!! Barf!
