It has been recently determined that the Merrimack River is contaminated with minute quantities of at least 16 pharmaceuticals. Since several communities take their drinking water supply from the Merrimack this is obviously a concern.
As most of you know the word “Natural” on a product does NOT mean it’s organic. To check if something is organic look for the organic certification that will be printed on the container. I was at the used book store the other day and as usual I was browsing in the old hard cover book section. Not only do you occasionally find some treasures of literature, but the book itself, how beautifully it’s made, it’s history.. I just love it and love seeing them on the mantle. .. Anyway this one book caught my eye. It had that red criss-cross striping like the old kitchen table cloths or the Betty Crocker Cookbook. It was a book from 1937 called the Country Kitchen. There’s a good article in the Boston Globe this morning about a farmer who devotes part of his crop to organic cranberry farming. Once again, you can take out all the considerations of pesticides, non-eco friendly farming etc and it still boils down to the fact that the organic is just a better quality product. I love their description of the “bounce” quality test and the resulting fate of the berries which pass vs those who are, let’s say, “flat”…. “Berries that bounce seven times are keepers.
