The Family.. This Christmas Cometh

Well sometime tomorrow afternoon “the fam” will descend onto my home and into my life. This includes guests from North Carolina, Virginia and Western Mass. We’re going to location A to do a party thing then back to my place to “party on”. The challenge to keep them all fed and happy while we compete at a variety of games (looks like Scrabble, Yahtzee and Table Hockey will be the big ones). Forget the Kennedy’s and touch football .. too tame.. you know there’s something very disturbing about the way every person in the bunch [...click to contimue reading...]

Green Christmas Ideas Revisited

In 2007 we posted a list of ideas to make your Christmas Greener. This excellent post , if we do say, can be found here. Well looking back how are things this year as a result?

The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture has a program where they actively assist farmers to transition to organic production. This includes grants plus expertise from financial and organic farming experts. Just imagine you’re a conventional farmer, kind of scary to go organic and literally risk the farm by venturing into the unknown. This program shows them the way and helps minimize costly errors. Target stores were busted for advertising Silk Soymilk as Organic even through Dean Foods which makes the stuff switched from Organic to Non-Organic Soybeans in 2009. And apparently Target has the same problem. They were advertising this Silk stuff as organic because they used an old photo in their ads. Sheesh! Della Lutes' Organic Apple Dowdy Recipe

We tried the long forgotten Apple Dowdy recipe as described in Della Lutes’ Book “The Country Kitchen”. This is her Aunt’s Recipe from the 1890′s as she describes it and it was certainly around for many years prior to this as it passed from generation to generation. Now Della did not specify Organic “This” or Organic “That” in her recipe simply because everything was organically grown back then. But unfortunately, now we must, since we really have two classes of foods to choose from. One could say ”old-school vs. chem lab” but I won’t … so everything organic and please hold the [...click to contimue reading...]
