The New Year season is upon us and traditionally this is a time when we reflect on the past year and look forward as to how we can improve the upcoming one. Although these are personal choices there are ten easy things we can resolve to do to make our lifestyles more organic and environmentally friendly.
The environmental costs of mining gold are tremendous. From a 2005 New York Times Article miners must dig up over 30 tons of raw ore to obtain a single ounce of pure gold. Then, after excavation they typically use cyanide based compounds to extract the elemental gold. Needless to say the environmental impact and energy costs are tremendous.
I was just doing the dishes and noticed that I was washing some old yogurt containers and an empty jar that once contained salsa..Looking over to the stove is a small bottle of extra virgin olive oil….I think I bought that bottle last year and have been refilling it from large bulk jugs of the stuff.. keeps the oil handy and in an easy to pour container. Jeff Foxworthy has said “If you have matching salad bowls and they all say Cool Whip on the side…then you might be a redneck”..So while I’m not one [...click to contimue reading...]
Driving is a major source of green house gasses and, is also a major drain on two important personal resources.. time and money. Ben Franklin said something such as “Do not Waste Time As That Is The Stuff That Life Is Made Of”. Let’s look at what we can do to help the planet, our pocketbooks and have more leisure at the same time.
As you are probably aware, Christmas has been hijacked by Madison Avenue. We as a society have been convinced that everything Christmas has to be this store bought affair. Maybe these are the same geniuses who got the chemicalized, colorized and preservativized “food” to be considered conventional while the real organic food made by mother nature from air, water & sunshine to be unusual and even a bit “kooky”. Well, we can start taking back our food and our holidays a little bit at a time. One such step is to make “old school” garland…Using thread, a needle, [...click to contimue reading...]
If you think about it Christmas is a time for many things, not the least of which is the tremendous amount of resources we consume. It’s as if this is the big hoopla capping off a year of mindless consumerism. Not that we should abolish Christmas, although every year I say I’m going to opt out and only participate in the mistletoe & “good will towards my fellow man” sort of things. But we can do Christmas more sensibly and if we really try.. use this as an opportunity to make the planet a little [...click to contimue reading...]

As you probably know, this hormone we’re talking about is given to dairy cows to soup up their milk production and the powers that be have decided: 1. That this is not bad for you.. & 2. That you, the consumer, shouldn’t be told since you might make a crazy decision such as choosing not to buy it (“It [...click to contimue reading...]
Janna Seliger has published a good article on Buzzle.com regarding the steps we can take to make a positive contribution to greening the environment. These include: Getting a hybrid or electric car if you really have to have a car at all. Moving to the city where you can use public transit, bike or walk to everything. Using Solar Energy for your home. Choosing Organic Products for Everything. Purchase recycled products and recycle everything you can. Live in an apartment or condo complex. Like every transition we need to constantly think and make little improvements every day. [...click to contimue reading...]
