Seems that people in Germany have turned to organic in a big way after the dioxin scare. It’s easy to get complacent and just ignore the organic food movement. We’ve all heard it “a bunch of wing nuts… wasting money..” . Well, maybe most of the conventional food is perfectly safe .. we believe.. Actually most conventional foods, even the so called purest, often contain chemical residues from agriculture and processing. But one thing’s for sure and that an Organic Certification is a nice extra layer of assurance of purity. And that’s a pretty good [...click to contimue reading...]
I haven’t had much to do with Hexane since back in the day in chemistry lab. This compound is a very good solvent with many important industrial uses but when I read that it was being used to solvate and extract fat from Soy Veggie Burgers I almost fell over. I mean, of course it’s an excellent chemical to perform this function, but to use it on food to be consumed… What are they thinking? Anyway, there’s a flood of news on the subject.. a neurotoxin, blurred vision, headaches from exposure, the FDA doesn’t have limits [...click to contimue reading...]
As I’m sure you’ve all heard Cadbury has announced that it has found the chemical melamine in it’s chocolate products made at it’s factory in Beijing. This is believed to be related to the melamine found in powdered milk for babies that so far has caused the deaths of four infants and other medical problems in 54,000 others that we know of. Melamine as you may know is used to create a thermosetting plastic resin. One of it’s main problems is it’s tendency form insoluble crystals in the bloodstream that can cause blockages in the kidneys. [...click to contimue reading...]
Over the past few months my diet has been transitioning to being closer to vegetarian than anything else. And this is a smart thing given it’s effects of lowering cholesterol and increasing physical and mental energy. Now don’t get me wrong, I’ll still enjoy non-vegetarian cooking from time to time (and if I’m going to have something non-vegetarian I make sure that it’s an outstanding party in my mouth. .. Hamburger helper need not apply). However, one of the challenges of eating this way is making certain you are getting an adequate intake of protein (you need to consult with your nutritionist or [...click to contimue reading...]
I use to be a big believer in prepping and cooking huge batches of vegi’s and storing them to “get it done”. But I’ve been getting away from this for a couple of reasons..First, it’s pretty daunting washing, peeling & cutting so many vegi’s. And even though I’d try to work some music and social aspect into it, it was still about 3 hrs work for the amount of cooking I’d do (I love vegetables). So it took a quite bit of time time at a single setting (and there was that argument the chef’s knife had with [...click to contimue reading...]
So have been running with the experiment of living without Gluten, Dairy, Nuts or Coffee just to get myself totally detoxed and level set to a completely healthy state. And so far the results have been fantastic… am able to go to bed earlier..sleep like a rock and wake up totally refreshed as opposed to being all grogged up from a food sensitivity hangover. Also, we’re talking about feeling this good while getting up at 4:30 AM .. Nice.
Sorry I have been away from the blog for almost a week, but it’s been a tough one. Continued experimenting with Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free, Caffeine-Free Living and there have been tough days with some pretty harsh withdrawal symptoms. But one of the good outcomes to surface was in learning that I was anemic due to an iron deficiency. Prior to this I’d eat very clean during the week and have one off-day during the weekend. Turns out that upon analysis, my weekly diet (not counting the off-day) supplied about 50% of the RDA of iron..seems that the [...click to contimue reading...]
Many people are leery of Teflon Non-Stick Cookware. Now it’s not absolutely certain that it has negative effects but why mess with it at all when there’s Cast Iron…An all natural non-stick cookware. And not only is it non-stick but unlike Teflon cookware it can last a lifetime. It even adds iron to your foods….But first you must make the cast iron cookware you purchase non-stick. This process is known as “seasoning”.
