My niece learned that she was intolerant to Gluten. Now this kid is a real athlete who’s being scouted by colleges..However, she was finding her ankles & face swelling up, oversleeping, and generally feeling run down. Turns out she has a reaction to Gluten. Now, she’s Gluten-Free and feeling 110%.. better than ever. But if she had this reaction could I possibly feel better without Gluten?…Well, you can intellectualize it till the cows come home but the only way to find out is to get your doctor’s OK and then dive right into it, take it for [...click to contimue reading...]

Research conducted at the University of Toronto seems to indicate that combining several cholesterol reducing foods can significantly lower your levels…possibly to the point of eliminating the need for cholesterol medications.

Irrational Fears and Irrational Bravado

I recently read a study where the results were that we tend to fear and guard ourselves against the things that will never happen to the vast majority of us… things such as a plane crash…..but we’ll wolf down three eggs with sides of bacon, buttered toast & ham … “stroke-schmoke”. And along this vein, most people will gobble  insecticide residues, chemical colorings & preservatives that do not have long term exposure testing…”Ah that won’t kill ya.. organic is just a waste of money..”.  Well, here’s a comparison of some of the things we’re irrationally scared of and those [...click to contimue reading...]

Contrary to what many believe olive oil can be very good for frying. This oil has a smoke point of about 375F so with a medium heat you should be good to go. The reason I tend to under-do it on the heat is because medium is usually enough to get the job done and the oil undergoes a minimum of deleterious effects (hydrogenation and loss of flavor). Earlier today I sauteed some scallions, mushrooms and peppers in olive oil to use in a sandwich and it tasted great.  Now in addition to taste, olive oil [...click to contimue reading...]

More Negative Effects of the Antimicrobial Triclosan (aka Microban)

Back in August, 2007 the Organic Test Kitchen created a post dealing with the popular anitmicrobial Triclosan. Now the Washington Post published their take on this chemical. Here’s the highlights

One of the allures of the organic lifestyle is that we can be lulled into the false belief that you can just eat naturally and clean, eliminate all the pesticides and chemical additives etc. and you’ll be remarkably healthy. Well..not really. The simple fact is that you have to exercise, stretch, manage stress and get your proper rest. Sorry folks, but the allure of the magic bullet that something consumed will make everything alright… is not right. Let’s talk exercise. Our body needs it to be at it’s best. It seems that we physically (and you can argue [...click to contimue reading...]

Right now, if you used a conventional deodorant this morning, you may actually have a biocide known as Triclosan slathered all over your arm pits. The purpose of this compound is to kill off the bacteria that creates body odor. For a list of reference information about Triclosan check out the EPA’s Pesticides Page “Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), Index for Triclosan (I’m not kidding, Pesticides)…Huh.. Triclosan is of course one of those “nice” names given to complex chemicals. So to be more accurate, you actually have something in the chlorinated diphenyl ether group slathered all over your [...click to contimue reading...]
