Over the past few months my diet has been transitioning to being closer to vegetarian than anything else. And this is a smart thing given it’s effects of lowering cholesterol and increasing physical and mental energy. Now don’t get me wrong, I’ll still enjoy non-vegetarian cooking from time to time (and if I’m going to have something non-vegetarian I make sure that it’s an outstanding party in my mouth. .. Hamburger helper need not apply). However, one of the challenges of eating this way is making certain you are getting an adequate intake of protein (you need to consult with your nutritionist or [...click to contimue reading...]
Well, back from the no-blog vacation (like blogging about food is something I needed a vacation from). Anyway goofed off for a number of weeks, met some incredible people and just up’d everything by two levels. .. It’s been a very, very nice couple of weeks. Anyway, back to Soy Milk. This is West Soy’s brand. One of those beverage products that comes in a box that needs no refrigeration.. And this is nice especially if you’re roughing it with a backpack in the middle of nowhere. It has this plastic tab kind of thing with a [...click to contimue reading...]
What a week it’s been ….. Yahoo who handles the web hosting for my business has gone from bad to really..really bad. So I’ve been scrambling trying to learn web design in CSS and rebuilding the site for a new hosting service. Di even had this party-ish thing that I had to bag out of…sheesh.. Anyway, whining really didn’t make me feel better before, so I got some So Delicious Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert (aka Soy Ice Cream). And here’s the deal.. It cost me $4.69 for a quart (four cups). However, when I opened it up [...click to contimue reading...]
I’ve been missing in action for about a week due to tax time (and last weekend Diane collared me to have one day of fun .. she’s taking her 5th grade class camping this week so she needed time to hang out. .. so we hung out). Anyway, during all of this I needed some adventure so I picked up some Horizon Organic Yogurt (fat free) for the first time. Here’s the deal. .. Ingredients are Organic grade A pasteurized nonfat milk, fructan (NutraFlora, a natural dietary fiber), pectin, live and active cultures (S.thermophillus, L. bulgaricus, [...click to contimue reading...]
Had a hankering for some chocolate today, .. actually was sauntering around the organic isle at the local grocery when I saw someone offering samples of dark chocolate, .. like a little kid, I see it and I want it. So anyway, bought a Newman’s Own Organic Sweet Dark Chocolate Bar. And since I’m staying away from dairy and gluten first checked the label. This thing contains Organic Dark Chocolate (Organic Sugar, Organic Chocolate Liquor, Organic Cocoa Butter, Soy Lecithin and Organic Vanilla). It looks good on the surface but they add that it may [...click to contimue reading...]
My friend Diane and I wanted to get out to play a game or two of rummy. Going to the local bar or coffee house wasn’t quite right since we also wanted something that was both good & real to eat. So we sauntered down to the local Whole Foods Market to hit their salad bar. The first thing we found was the awesome freebies. Cheese, crackers etc. But since I’m still going gluten and diary free I stuck with the Veggie Chips and the Olives with Garlic (which were incredible). Don’t get me wrong I didn’t pull up [...click to contimue reading...]
As a test we made up two batches of Boston Baked Beans. One made of all organic ingredients and the second exactly the same but using conventional beans purchased at a very busy grocery chain. Both were baked in identical cast iron dutch ovens, in the same oven, at the same time. What we found surprised us (we were only expecting a mild flavor difference..after all we were dealing with dried beans). Anyway, here’s what we found:
