As previously mentioned we all tend to stay within very narrow and familiar culinary boundaries all our lives. We really should explore more of the food choices that are out there, right at our fingertips.. So in the area of Rice..there’s more than just White & Brown.. Let’s take a quick look at Himalayan Red Rice.
We bought a box of the Nature’s Path Toaster Pastries to see if they’d measure up..here’s the highlights of what we found… USDA Organic Labeling…Good! Pretty good nutrition but God knows why all toaster pastries are such high calories (200 for these) but that’s typical for the product category. But no cholesterol. Sure beats bacon & eggs. Easy to make. Pop in the toaster on low setting. Smell awesome. Taste very, very nice…Not over the top sweet. Flavor like a home made pie crust. Hint of blueberry and great frosting flavor…And warm..Very nice treat. In [...click to contimue reading...]
One of the common benefits of “conventional” foods is the convenience factor in preparation. Given the wonders of modern chemistry one can, with very little effort, put together something for a quick & easy meal. However, as the Organic Movement gains momentum, convenience type products are becoming more readily available. But how good are they for say an easy gravy for a turkey dinner? To find out end we purchased a packet of Simply Organic Roasted Turkey Gravy Mix and checked it out. Well, we confirmed that this was in fact an organic product by noting the [...click to contimue reading...]
Everyone it seems loves a good muffin. And why not? They are warm, taste great and they give you that great carb treat without being too sweet. But…the muffins we see at the local stores have God knows what in them and we don’t always have enough time for scratch baking. So we purchased a box or Dr. Oetker’s Organic Apple Cinnamon Muffin Mix to see if this is a possible solution. Well, first things first, the box predominately displays the USDA Organic Label in the front and on the rear we learn that the [...click to contimue reading...]
One of our favorite types of commercially available organic foods are those which travel well and for the most part this means it does not require refrigeration. So we purchased some Corn Thins from the Real Foods Company (like that name).. Checking out the bag we see that they are certified organic by Australian Certified Organic. They also display the USDA Organic Label and the GMO Free Lable (indicating the product is free of genetically modified ingredients). Nice. They are described as popped corn cakes and here’s their pitch..”The great taste of golden sun-ripened corn with sesame.” OK.. And [...click to contimue reading...]
I’m a bit of an Ice Cream Addict. I love the taste, the coolness, the sweetness and creaminess. Absolutely love it. But I’m not too crazy about the cholesterol it dumps into my system and ultimately on the inside of my veins. They weren’t kidding when they said death by chocolate. So in a search for a healthier alternative we bought some So Delicious Organic Chocolate Velvet “Ice Cream”. This stuff has 130 calories vs the 300 for Ben and Jerry’s (B&J’s) New York Super Chunk, it has 0 mgs cholesterol vs. 35 for B&J’s [...click to contimue reading...]
I’m a fan of scratch cooking for two reasons, the main one being that I love good food and homemade scratch dishes are simply the best (so long as you know what you’re doing). And the second reason of course is that I simply love to cook. However….some days you just get slammed with things to do. Or sometimes you just get in the mood for something all of a sudden and you don’t have all the ingredients you need right on hand. For these real world scenarios (and for those who can’t or aren’t interested [...click to contimue reading...]
Well, football season is upon us, and in addition the normal dangers (such as body-painting yourself “to support the team”) there’s the obnoxious snack problem to deal with. You know the snacks, the junk food, the garbage that packs on the pounds and leaves you with a food hangover the next day. So in search for an alternative we picked up a bag of Snyder’s of Hanover Honey Wheat Sticks. These are Organic with the USDA Label and Certified by Pennsylvania Certified Organic. The nutrition listed on their website isn’t too bad (by the way cross referencing with the bag [...click to contimue reading...]
