I recently bought a small sample of Organic Trail Mix at the local shop. I almost fainted at the cost of $9.35/pound (here’s my point of reference..this week lobster is going for $3.99/pound..) but bought a small sample just to check it out. .. Well, as expected, it was interesting and had a nice mix of flavors going on. However, I don’t think I’ll be buying it again anytime soon. And the reason is not so much the cost as the fact that it’s only various ingredients mixed together .. simple. And so this is something [...click to contimue reading...]

We’re adding a new category to the Organic Test Kitchen and that’s Taste Tests. This should be a fun one where we compare our impression of two different food items. and we’ll be objective with no agenda to push. If the conventional item for instance tastes better it tastes better..we can’t do anything about it. It is what it is as they say. The conventional stuff might have hidden residual pesticides but again it is what it is… Now this is a revised post. One of the latest kitchen appliances in the past few years has been what is known as single serve coffee machines. The angle being that you make one cup of fresh coffee for immediate consumption. .. And how can we disagree? Most everything (especially coffee) tastes much better fresh. This compared to my parents “coffee” that sits on the coffee maker hotplate burning and turning bitter. Although this is an improvement over the days when they had a percolator which would actually boil the coffee. .. Actually, this is one of my “back in the day how tough [...click to contimue reading...]
Went to shopping today during lunch and saw a lot of great kitchen deals…today at Macy’s in New Hampshire I bought a 16 Quart Enamel Stock Pot for $19 (Regular Price is $60) and a Cast Iron Casserole Dutch Oven for $7 (Regular Price is $20)…. Also in tonight’s paper.. Kohl’s is selling a KitchenAid Heavy Duty Stand Mixer for $229.99 (Regular Price $369.99). This is just to give the OTK Readers a heads up. We’re not in any way affiliated, paid off or wined & dined (..uhh.. I wish) by Macy’s, Kohl’s or KitchenAid. Related Links: [...click to contimue reading...]
I was just doing the dishes and noticed that I was washing some old yogurt containers and an empty jar that once contained salsa..Looking over to the stove is a small bottle of extra virgin olive oil….I think I bought that bottle last year and have been refilling it from large bulk jugs of the stuff.. keeps the oil handy and in an easy to pour container. Jeff Foxworthy has said “If you have matching salad bowls and they all say Cool Whip on the side…then you might be a redneck”..So while I’m not one [...click to contimue reading...]
Driving is a major source of green house gasses and, is also a major drain on two important personal resources.. time and money. Ben Franklin said something such as “Do not Waste Time As That Is The Stuff That Life Is Made Of”. Let’s look at what we can do to help the planet, our pocketbooks and have more leisure at the same time.
