Book Review: The Country Kitchen by Della T. Lutes

I was at the used book store the other day and as usual I was browsing in the old hard cover book section. Not only do you occasionally find some treasures of literature, but the book itself, how beautifully it’s made, it’s history.. I just love it and love seeing them on the mantle. .. Anyway this one book caught my eye. It had that red criss-cross striping like the old kitchen table cloths or the Betty Crocker Cookbook. It was a book from 1937 called the Country Kitchen. Originally copyrighted in 1935 this particular book was [...click to contimue reading...]

As I’m sure you’ve all heard Cadbury has announced that it has found the chemical melamine in it’s chocolate products made at it’s factory in Beijing. This is believed to be related to the melamine found in powdered milk for babies that so far has caused the deaths of four infants and other medical problems in 54,000 others that we know of.  Melamine as you may know is used to create a thermosetting plastic resin. One of it’s main problems is it’s tendency form insoluble crystals in the bloodstream that can cause blockages in the kidneys. [...click to contimue reading...]

Have been hot & heavy lately in the process of moving. Even right now I’m in the living room of my new house looking at the fireplace and if I crane my neck can also get a peak at the best part about the place.. the stove…Gas…finally..  As someone who has literally suffered through those flat top stoves and then electric I’m pretty psyched to get going on the ultimate design for kicking up and kicking down the heat instantly…Natural Gas.  The more control the better.  Now the kitchen could be bigger but what happened [...click to contimue reading...]

We generally think of organic or inorganic as just the food.. how it came into being, processing, what toxic or healthy residues remain, the effect of it’s production on the earth and human society. .. But what about the “environmental factors” taking place during our dining experience? What’s the deal if we’re lucky enough to have this exquisite meal before us but are exposed to the toxic and really inorganic poisons of the wrong dinner companion?  Well not from plan but purely by accident I was exposed to both extremes a little over a month [...click to contimue reading...]

On the road again to Charlotte. And there are some great people here but I have a suspicion they may try to feed me .. “treat me”.. to conventional food. Already asked twice for a lift to the market but was told not to worry since they would be taking care of everything (that’s exactly what I’m worried about). .. Will press the market again from some other angle and see what happens.  It’s fairly easy to live healthy when in your own home. The trick is having the wherewithal and fortitude to make this [...click to contimue reading...]

It was my birthday last Sunday which also happens to be my excuse de jour for not posting. But in addition to being an excuse for goofing off, I got some cool new gifts as well. One was this laser paperweight from a dear friend, a super sharp high carbon steel paring knife from another (who felt my pain over not finding one at the Thrift Store) and another was also got Ralph the Fish. I was told I needed a live-in companion and so was given Ralph. And you know what? .. I really love [...click to contimue reading...]

If you eat fish or meat and don’t go to the Supermarket/Farmer’s Market every day you might be eating old food. This stuff ages quickly so I like to go to a place that moves tons of volume. Then I buy what I need for the next day (and at worse case the next two days max). Always looking for the expiration date and search for the one that’s farthest out there.  And in doing this my Salmon still smelled a bit fishy for my liking the other day. Imagine if this had been sitting [...click to contimue reading...]

The day trip with a business associate last week actually turned out pretty well. As you may or may not recall, I was travelling in Connecticut with this guy from New York who was a big conventional eater.  Unlike Vegas, this trip focused on veggies and protein. Made some mixed veggies, tossed them in a little extra virgin olive oil & sliced in some raw garlic for a bit of kick. Then had some fish cooked with a drizzle of olive oil. These were cooled and placed in containers. So on the way down I wolfed and I [...click to contimue reading...]

Have to drive down to Connecticut tomorrow and travel with this guy from New York who’s a big eater of all that I hold as evil. So two problems, one I like to eat light and frequent meals .. the New York guy, he can live off of body stores of fat and then undergo a massive refueling at lunch. Second problem is that the place for lunch will most likely have an all junk menu. So the plan is to load up on high quality protein and oil on the way up (fish with [...click to contimue reading...]

Today I went to a major medical supplier to help them work out some problems with their process. They are a good company providing cutting edge supplies for vital surgical procedures. .. Anyway, after we got the problem fixed we all went to lunch at their favorite restaurant “A nice Italian Place”. Now when I heard that, I thought I was sunk. Wheat and dairy causes me major problems and the pasta, the cheeses, the breadings..this wasn’t going to be pretty.  So we made it down there and the lady who owns the place, a real sweetheart, [...click to contimue reading...]
